Public Charging
BENEFITS OF PUBLIC CHARGING
Public charging solutions provide EV owners with charging solutions away from the home, delivering benefits such as:
- The reassurance that their EV isn’t far from a recharging point
- The ability to charge the vehicle over a long period of time when available or a short period of time when needed
- An opportunity to select charge points near a destination for optimum convenience
- The assurance of belonging to the BlueOval Charge Network, with access to over 26,000 locations with 84,000 plugs (and growing) with a single login on the FordPass App(1)
- The possibility of being able to charge for free(1)
PUBLIC CHARGING OPTIONS
There are three primary public charging options available to Ford EV owners. The charging speed for each depends upon:
- The voltage of the source
- The amperage (amps) the charge cord can carry
- The capacity (size) of the battery receiving the charge
240-Volt Charging Station
Connection
Charge Speed
Recommend Usage
Provides Level 2 charging with SAE J1772 Connector
5 –20 miles of range per hour depending on kW (when vehicle state of charge is between 10%–80% full)(2)
Plug-In Hybrid: Can fully charge in 1 to 2 hours.
All-Electric: Adequate charging solution for an all-electric vehicle without a fully depleted battery. Provides about two-thirds of a charge in an 8-hour charge session.
DC Fast-Charge Station
Connection
Charge Speed
Recommend Usage
Provides Level 3 charging with CCS/SAE Connector
Adds 30–60 miles of range in 10 minutes with a 100+ kW DC charger(2)
NOTE: This method charges the battery to about 80% before slowing down to protect the battery
Plug-In Hybrid: Not recommended
All-Electric: Preferred charging solution for road trips.
A Deeper Look at 120-Volt, 240-Volt, and DC Fast Charging
Fundamentally, it is the capacity of the onboard charging component within the vehicle that determines its maximum charging speed. This can differ from vehicle to vehicle.
When charging with an AC source, the vehicle must use its onboard charger to convert the power to DC so it can be stored in the battery. The capability of the onboard charger to make the conversion determines how fast the vehicle can charge
When charging with a DC charging station, the electricity arrives at the vehicle already in DC form and can be sent directly to the vehicle’s battery at a much higher rate, bypassing the vehicle’s onboard charger
- DC charging stations cost significantly more than AC power stations, draw more power, place a greater demand on the electrical grid and are only suited for properly equipped locations
- DC Fast-Charge stations are not available for installation at residences
- May also be referred to as DC Fast Charge (DCFC), DC High Powered Charge or DC Ultrafast Charge
